This motion calls on the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to exercise her discretion under the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 2004 and give permission to extend Annaghdown graveyard, County Galway, in light of the impending crisis, given that only one burial plot remains, and the lack of funding available to Galway County Council to purchase another suitable site.

I commend and thank Fidelma Healy Eames for her interest and official question on the need for an extension to Annaghdown graveyard, which is our family graveyard too.
I also thank our County Councillors. Mary Hoade and James Charity for their tremendous support to the Committee.
As author of "Monastic I Ruins at Annaghdown, Co. Galway" I am of course very interested in the history and heritage of the area. Knowing the legal restrictions of NHA, etc. I am also aware of the absolute urgent need of an extension to the graveyard. I urge the Minister to make exception as previous Ministers have done because of the ugent need of an extension to the graveyard. I am sure she could add a legal clause in case of any historical heritage discoveries in future digging in the proposed addition.
