I wish to seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order31 to discuss the following matter requiring urgent consideration, namely, recognising the duty of the Garda Síochána to protect the public from harm, the need for the Government, in the interests of credibility and community confidence, to establish an independent investigation into an incident in Gort, County Galway, last night during which an armed man was shot with a live round by a garda and to ensure that, in the interests of all involved, investigations into such incidents are not conducted by members of the Garda Síochána but rather are genuinely independent.
