State Response to Online Disinformation and Media and Digital Literacy: Discussion (Resumed)

1:30 pm

Ms Martina Chapman:

This picks up on the point Deputy Ring made earlier, in that there is a difference between traditional regulated media and other media. It is not exactly a level playing field. It is quite difficult for somebody who is receiving information, potentially online. We are asking a lot of individuals to take a step back and question if they know who produced a particular piece of content, what their intentions were, who owns that media, what that media is trying to do and if it is trying to inform or entertain or is trying to persuade them to do something or think a particular way. However, we are then asking individuals to ask if something is regulated and if they understand what that regulation means, the guidelines and the rules that are around, for example, print or broadcast media and how that differs from content they might engage with online.
