Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Mr. Paul Connors:

If I can just add to that and to answer the Deputy's question directly, which I believe is important, as to our having achieved all the goals of the previous scheme, the broad thrust of the goals have been achieved. There were specifics, however, in that previous scheme related to the west, and probably to the rest of the country, if it had been applied, which it was not. I will not sit here today and say that we achieved everything because we probably did not. As to progression, I believe that great steps were taken in the direction of the broad goals, as the Deputy describes them.

Mr. Mac Aodha Bhuí has referenced where, for example, training ceased in 2009 because of the recession. This was a huge blow and we would have discussed what we would have liked to have done over a number of years between 2009 and 2016. We did not achieve a great deal because the money was not there to do that. I would certainly like to think that this strategy moves us beyond that point now, where we can pick up those goals that were in the scheme and more of the integrated aspect that Mr. Ó Coileáin has spoken about, and apply this to all of the Gaeltachts and beyond.
