They are significant, but many of those allowances are compensation for money expended. Others are based on a formula agreed with the Department of Finance. The local post allowance allows a certain amount of additional expenditure which one requires when living abroad. When living abroad there is a need to expend more on various aspects of one's life to keep up with representational aspects and additional aspects of life, for instance the need to travel on a not very regular basis to see one's family.
