Access to Work for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion
2:00 am
Séamus Healy (Tipperary South, Independent) | Oireachtas source
I thank the witnesses for being with us and for their opening statements. The level of employment among people with disabilities is completely unacceptable and obviously out of kilter with other countries. Most of the issues around this have already been raised by other members. However, there are two issues I wish to return to. The first is remote working. One would imagine that there are significant opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in remote working. Is there any indication that is the case? Are there barriers even in that area to people with disabilities? If there are, what are they? If there are barriers, there they should be highlighted urgently because remote working should be a significant opportunity for people with disabilities to engage in the workforce.
In the traditional employment areas, so to speak, I raise the issue of transport to employment, access to public transport and access for basic things like wheelchairs. Are there specific actions the witnesses feel should be taken in those areas to ensure people with disabilities can actually get to work?
