Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Foilsitheoireacht agus Léitheoireacht na Gaeilge: Plé (Atógáil).

Mr. Alun Ceri Jones:

The various streams of funding that are available are quite extensive. In a way it is natural that a publisher needs to source the right kind of funding for the projects it may have. If the clár na leabhar Gaeilge is concentrating more on original material, then it might not be the right source of funding for us. Dalen is coming to Irish language publishing from the Welsh perspective, where the market is fairly strong and where there is essentially one funding organisation that assists publishers in so many different ways, from grant funding for publications to games funding and funding of staff in larger publishing houses. If the Irish ecosystem could find some sort of similar way forward where an umbrella organisation could potentially direct publishers and producers to appropriate kinds of funding, then it might be easier to have a broader picture of what could be produced. Having said that, the funding Dalen has received in recent years from the Arts Council, the Irish language publishing programme and COGG is extremely generous. The funding available for what I assume is the right kind of programme and potential titles to be published in Ireland is very generous and goes a long way to help us produce material.
