Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil)

Mr. Paul Hogan:

You cannot account for every circumstance and situation and one of the benefits of having guidance is to help address these issues. On the national planning framework, there is a reference and policy objective on page 85 on the Gaeltacht and Gaeltacht language plans and supporting their implementation and ensuring it stays on the agenda for the planning system. This is the opportunity to put more flesh on the bones of that and we just have not gotten to it until now. Looking at where the language is strong and why that may be is an interesting suggestion, as well as looking at the settlement pattern that goes with that. I did not fully understand whether the Deputy was advocating for a different form of settlement or replicating what is there but the Deputy mentioned the idea of a Gaeltacht town. That is going a bit far but there are opportunities where there are water treatment services or land available.
