General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill: Discussion (Resumed)
Ms Julie Inman Grant:
Part of what was written into the job description for the eSafety Commissioner was some knowledge of the technology industry.
As I have said, that has come in handy. Depending on how complex the codes of practice are, Ireland might decide to choose somebody with a much deeper skill set when it comes to bureaucracy, codes enforcement and development or investigation. An all-rounder may be needed.
As the online safety regulatory network grows globally, we must engage internationally with counterparts. We must engage with non-governmental organisations. We are managing many competing interests and dealing with citizens in great distress. Sometimes we cannot help people. A person is required who is a good communicator with a good team around him or her. A person also needs much resilience because the pace of technology will always outstrip policy. We are moving very quickly and we must be deft and stay a step ahead. We are dealing with some hard issues and we must steel our resolve. This person must also be able to lead a team and ensure they are focused on the task and also healthy when it comes to their well-being. What would Mr. Dagg consider the secrets of success?
