97. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will examine the feasibility of introducing an audio fare announcement system in taxis, similar to the Marquay model used in parts of the United States, which provides audible confirmation of the starting fare, route and final fare for blind and visually impaired passengers, in order to strengthen passenger protection and ensure transparency in taxi journeys; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The regulation of the small public service vehicle (SPSV) industry, including the creation of regulations governing the requirement to fit and operate specified equipment in vehicles such as taximeters, is a matter for the independent transport regulator, the National Transport Authority (NTA) under the provisions of the Consolidated Taxi Regulation Acts 2013 and 2016. I have no role in the day-to-day operations of the SPSV sector.
Accordingly, I have referred your question to the NTA for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you have not received a response within 10 working days.
