179. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason that school children in areas (details supplied) were not picked up for school by school transport on several dates in September and October, with no notice and leaving children on the side of the road without a way to school, if the Minister will seek an explanation for this and provide reassurance that this will not happen again; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Bus Éireann operates the school transport scheme on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth. The purpose of the scheme is to provide transport for children living remotely from their nearest school.

Bus Éireann are also responsible for the planning and timetabling of school transport routes on behalf of the Department. They advise that they are following up with local office staff regarding the matters raised. The School Transport Section of my Department will furnish this information directly to the Deputy as soon as it is available
