The increased deployment of safety cameras in the coming years is a key action to be delivered under the Phase 2 Action Plan of the all-of-Government Road Safety Strategy for this decade, which aligns with commitments in the Programme for Government. My Department will support this work through legislative amendments to the Road Traffic Acts and other sectoral legislation where necessary.

However, neither I nor my officials are directly involved in deciding on the locations of safety cameras or their installation or deployment. The regional road network falls under the remit of the relevant local authority in the first instance and the installation of cameras on the regional road network is being delivered in partnership between the local authorities and An Garda Síochána.

To assist with this work, Transport Infrastructure Ireland in consultation with key stakeholders has developed a Safety Camera Handbook outlining criteria for selecting sites for safety cameras.
