My Department’s office in Shannon manages the National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF) database. Vehicle Registration Certificates are issued to vehicle owners by post after a new or imported vehicle is licenced in this country for the first time, or where the vehicle changes ownership. The Vehicle Registration Certificate issued is in compliance with the requirements of EU Directive 1999/37/EC.

While there are discussions ongoing at EU level around amending the above Directive and enabling the Vehicle Certificate to be digitised, paper certificates will still be available to those who wish to use them. As the volume of postage from the office reduces, staff who are currently working in the printing and mailing unit will be reassigned to other duties within the Department of Transport, Shannon.
