224. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government when a company (details supplied) will provide the composting bins to customers pursuant to 2023 legislation to allow every household in the State to be provided with a brown bin for food waste and light garden waste by their waste collector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The European Union (Household Food Waste and Bio-waste) Regulations 2023, which came into force on the 1st January 2024, obliges collectors to provide a reusable receptacle for bio-waste to all their customers regardless of where they live.
Enforcement of the regulations is a matter for the relevant local authority. As such I would advise any householder who has not yet been provided with bio-waste collection service by their waste collector to contact their relevant local authority who will investigate the matter on their behalf. The Environment section of Galway County Council may be contacted at Environment@galwaycoco.ie.
Household and commercial waste segregation is a National Waste Enforcement Priority for 2025 therefore local authority waste enforcement efforts will continue to be targeted towards ensuring that all waste collectors are providing the level of service as required.
