I propose to take Questions Nos. 186 to 188, inclusive, together.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) works hard to ensure that the information collected and provided from the census remains current, relevant and of maximum use to the government and the public.

The 2027 Census questionnaire will include questions on sex at birth, on gender, and on sexual orientation. It will not include a question on sex characteristics.

The questions included in the 2027 Census were informed by a public consultation, engagement with a Census Advisory Group, and a pilot census survey conducted in 2024. Revisions reflect input from user groups.

Census 2027 will be a major undertaking for the CSO as, for the first time in Irish history, the public will have the option to complete their census form online. While the majority of the public are likely to avail of the new online option, it is expected that several hundred thousand households will opt to handwrite their census responses onto a paper form. Both online and paper census forms will be available in Irish and English.

The date of the next census will be Sunday 9 May 2027.
