The Deputy will be aware that Ireland's universities are autonomous institutions. As such, the management of their day-to-day functions, including opportunities to diversify their income streams, are matters for each individual institution.

In relation to sources of funding, the position is that income sources can include state grants, research grants and contracts, EU funding, investment income, donations and endowments, and other income such as library services, catering etc. Private income, such as income generated through international partnerships, forms part of the overall income generated by each university. Details of the various types of income generated by publicly funded higher education institutions are set out in their annual Financial Statements which are available to view on each institution’s website.

My Department does not compile information on the private income generated by autonomous higher education institutions. As such, the information that the Deputy has requested is not available.

MTU Kerry have a proposal progressing under the Technological Sector Strategic Projects Fund (TSSPF) programme at their Tralee campus. This proiect, along with their project under PPP Bundle 1, which I officially opened last week will facilitate the TU vacating their South Campus buildings. These buildings will in time transfer to Kerry ETB which will facilitate the consolidation and integration of FET provision in the Tralee region.

KETB are working on developing their FET College Major Capital business case proposal which includes the infrastructure they wish to deliver on their proposed Killarney site and this business case will also take into account their proposed uses for the South Campus site in Tralee.

Once this business case is developed, KETB will have the opportunity to submit this proposal for evaluation. Following evaluation, business cases that meet the evaluation criteria will advance to the next stage of development under the Infrastructure Guidelines: Pre-Tender – Project Design, Planning, and Procurement Strategy.

I remain committed to ensuring there is appropriate infrastructure in place to meet the needs of FET learners and teaching staff in Kerry and the wider region.
