I am advised by Revenue that the total sums written off as a result of an individual or company going into liquidation or bankruptcy for each year from 2015 to 2024, and to date in 2025, are listed in the table below.
Companies can go into liquidation either through the Creditors' Voluntary Liquidation process or through the Courts. The figures below reflect both liquidations from both procedures. When a liquidator is appointed, through either process, Revenue immediately writes out all outstanding liabilities as they are no longer collectible, and this is in line with best accounting practice. Where realisations are subsequently returned to Revenue, by the liquidator, Revenue will write back those amounts.
Individuals can either be self-adjudicated bankrupt or be petitioned by a creditor. The figures below reflect both procedures. When an individual is adjudicated bankrupt, Revenue immediately writes out all outstanding liabilities as they are no longer collectible, and this is in line with best accounting practice. Where realisations are subsequently returned to Revenue, by the Official Assignee, Revenue will write back those amounts.
