2146. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if it is appropriate for publicly funded universities to maintain entry criteria that are unrelated to the content of the course and that exclude otherwise qualified applicants; and if he will take steps to ensure that the NUI foreign language requirement is reformed so as not to disadvantage students unfairly. Under legislation, higher education institutions (HEIs), such as universities, have autonomy in relation to their admissions. Irish HEIs utilise the CAO, a non-profit private company, to centrally and impartially manage the admissions processes and instruct the CAO to make offers on their behalf to applicants. Neither I nor my Department has a role in matters relating to these processes.
