The Office of Public Works (OPW) manages over 32 Historic Properties and 780 National Monuments nationwide, including Barryscourt Castle, County Cork. The OPW’s remit includes the conservation, maintenance and presentation of these heritage sites for public benefit, while ensuring that all activities and visitor services are appropriate, sustainable and consistent with the protection of the historic environment.

Barryscourt Castle reopened to the public in April 2025 following an extensive programme of conservation, interpretation and visitor facilities works. The 2025 visitor season, which concluded in late August, was highly successful and featured guided tours, talks, concerts and educational events. A café cart operated on site throughout the summer period, providing an enhanced visitor amenity and a valued local service.

The OPW recognises the potential of Barryscourt Castle as both a significant heritage destination and a focal point for community engagement in East Cork. Looking ahead, the OPW is actively exploring opportunities to further enhance the visitor experience, including appropriate seasonal trading or catering activity, and cultural events that align with the character and conservation requirements of the site.

The OPW will continue to work closely with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the local authority and local stakeholders to identify suitable opportunities that can contribute to a vibrant visitor experience at Barryscourt Castle.
