425. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the number of Ukrainian-registered vehicles currently operating in the State; the estimated number that have not undergone NCT testing; and the measures being taken to ensure road safety and equitable treatment of all motorists. [59955/25]

Imported vehicles which have been registered previously in another jurisdiction and imported into Ireland are registered with and pay Vehicle Registration Tax to the Revenue Commissioners. The Minister for Finance can outline the numbers of Ukrainian vehicles that have re-registered in Ireland in this way. Subject to certain criteria, Revenue may grant a temporary exemption from the requirement to register a vehicle, including vehicles from Ukraine.
While my Department does not have a function in respect of the registration of vehicles, it should be noted that once an imported vehicle is re-registered in Ireland it is immediately treated the same way as any other Irish registered vehicle. The vehicle must pay annual motor tax, if it is using the public roads, must have valid insurance and must pass the NCT test if the car is over four years old. Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the operation of the NCT service.
I have therefore referred the Deputy's question in relation to NCT testing to the Authority for direct reply. I would ask the Deputy to contact my office if a response has not been received within ten days.
