The key factor for determining the level of staffing resources provided at individual school level is the staffing schedule for the relevant school year and pupil enrolments on the previous 30 September. The staffing schedule operates in a clear and transparent manner and treats all similar types of schools equally.
The staffing arrangements for primary schools includes a provision whereby schools experiencing a significant increase in enrolments may apply for a projected enrolment post, on the basis of projected enrolments for September 2025. The school referred to by the Deputy was allocated such a post, projecting an enrolment of 78. The actual enrolment achieved is 46.
The staffing arrangements include a staffing appeals process under which schools may appeal for additional staffing to an independent Primary Staffing Appeals Board. The school has submitted an appeal to the October meeting of the Appeals Board. The Board will meet later this month to consider staffing appeals for the 2025/26 school year and schools will be notified of the outcome of the appeal ahead of the mid-term break. The Appeals Board operates independently of the Department and its decision is final.
