126. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is aware of the ongoing issues with the Road Safety Authority’s driving test estimated waiting times; if he will explain why the estimated waiting times on the RSA portal are repeatedly extended rather than reflecting realistic timelines; his views on the impact this inaccuracy has on young people whose career or apprenticeship opportunities require a full driving licence; the measures being taken to ensure greater accuracy and fairness in providing applicants with test dates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the National Driver Testing Service. Accordingly, the information requested is held by the RSA.
Given the RSA's responsibility in this matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the RSA for direct, detailed response. Please contact my office if a reply is not received within ten days.
Pending this response, the Deputy will be aware that reducing driving test wait times has been one of my key priorities since taking office. The current national average wait time for a driver test is currently 10 weeks. This represents a significant reduction on the 27 week average wait time in April this year.
