297. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government his views on the merits of creating a grant scheme to support families with adult children, that have additional needs, to build garden dwellings that will allow their children to have independence while still being close to their support network; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department provides grant funding for adaptations of dwellings under the suite of Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People, to assist those in private houses to make their accommodation more suitable for their needs. The suite of grants, which include the Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People, the Mobility Aids Grant and the Housing Aid for Older People Grant, are funded by my Department with a contribution from the local authority. The detailed administration of the scheme is the responsibility of the local authorities, therefore the qualifying works is a matter for consideration and decision on a case-by-case basis by the local authority within the scope of the grant scheme.
I have no plans to create a grant scheme for the building of new dwellings in gardens.
