As Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports, I wish to advise that the remit of the Department of Transport in respect of disabled parking is limited to the legislation that underpins the Disabled Parking Scheme. The Scheme itself is operated on behalf of the Department by the Irish Wheelchair Association and the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland.

The Department does not have access to information on applications for permits. However, the most up to date information held in the Department on permits issued per year, from the ongoing review of the Scheme, is set out in the table below. Information on permits for 2023 and 2024 and a breakdown by county have been requested from the issuing organisations and will be forwarded to the Deputy on receipt.

Year 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022
Total 53,833 55,126 53,489 54,304 58,920
