My Department is fully supportive and remains committed to the opening of a Gaelcholáiste for Dublin south city. The proposal by the Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST) for Synge Street CBS to transition to a co-educational Gaelcholáiste is a welcome addition to the variety and diversity of school choice at post-primary level in the Dublin south city area. It will also meet the growing demand for a co-educational Gaelcholáiste in that area.

My Department is working with ERST to ensure the successful transition of the school to a co-educational Gaelcholáiste on a phased basis. The first phase of this transition, which will involve the 1st Year intake only, will take place in September 2026. Officials from my department recently visited the school and have assessed the possible accommodation requirements of the school, as it progresses to becoming a Gaelcholáiste.

The above work involves consultation with staff and school management and consideration of the practical steps required for the school community with respect to providing teaching and learning through the medium of Irish. Provision is also being made for those students currently learning through English and those who are preparing for State examinations.

Currently some of the school teaching staff are upskilling and there has been recruitment of Irish speaking teachers. A Príomhiode Tánaisteach has been appointed and this will also help drive the transition process forward. Finally, a school information night was held very recently to inform attendees about the 1st year intake in 2026 and the general progress being made with the Gaelcholáiste.
