In December 2015, Ireland ratified the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Ireland’s obligations under the Convention include the establishment of a National Inventory for Intangible Cultural Heritage to protect, promote and celebrate Irish living cultural heritage practices, customs, crafts and traditions. The National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage was launched in 2019 and has since expanded to 42 inscribed practices. The Department accepts applications for inscription on an ongoing basis. Snap Net Fishing was inscribed on Ireland's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019.
