At the outset, it is important to say my department is fully committed to ensuring that every child has an appropriate school place.

In order to assist with the enrolment of children without a school place, my department shares information on available capacity with the Education Welfare Service (EWS), which operates under the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000, a piece of legislation that emphasises the promotion of school attendance, participation, and retention. Officials from my department continue to liaise with Tusla’s Educational Support Service (TESS) to ensure that all children secure a school place for the new school year.

My department has been informed by TESS that the local educational welfare officer (EWO) has been in contact with the parents of the young person referred to by the Deputy. The young person has been offered a school place in a post-primary school which I am informed the family are accepting. The EWO will continue to support this young person and their family and will follow up with the school to ensure the young person in question is enrolled.
