186. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to outline the work that has taken place to achieve the extension of the runway at Waterford airport, and to introduce commercial flights to an international carrier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [50295/25]

The Programme for Government commits to working with all stakeholders to quickly progress Waterford Airport’s project to lengthen and widen the runway, building on the previous Government decision of 2019.

In line with this commitment, and the requirements under the Infrastructure Guidelines, Waterford Airport has been invited to submit a Preliminary Business Case for this development proposal. This was discussed in detail when I met with Government colleagues, Minister Butler and Minister Cummins and the CEO of Waterford City and County Council on 2 July.

Given the Exchequer funding being sought to support this proposal, my Department's role is as the approving authority. It will be the airport's role, as the sponsoring agency, to ensure that the necessary detail and evidence is provided in its business case to demonstrate that sufficient demand and industry commitment exists to facilitate regular scheduled passenger services on a year-round basis.

I would like to assure the Deputy that my Department will prioritise the assessment of any such case when received.
