179. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his Department has examined the feasibility of creating a single nationwide parking platform, similar to the UK National Parking Platform, to allow motorists to use one app across all local authority areas; and if not, the reason. 180. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he accepts that motorists currently face unnecessary costs and inconvenience by being forced to download and manage multiple parking apps across different local authorities; and if he will bring forward proposals to introduce an interoperable parking system, similar to the model used successfully for toll tags. I propose to take Questions Nos. 179 and 180 together.
In Ireland interoperability primarily exists for road tolling which is predominately based on National Roads and is co-ordinated by TII. This emerged with the development of the motorway network. Across Europe road toll interoperability also exists for registered tolling and has been led by the EU.
In Ireland the provision of parking is locally managed and as such is a matter for local authorities and individual parking garages. Although these are managed individually, in recent years many local authorities and parking operators are using a range of on-line apps with the result some interoperable parking services are being provided. Such services in this area are market-led and although there are currently no proposals on interoperability, work is underway to provide for improved sharing of parking data on a single data platform that will support these developments. The Deputy may wish to contact my colleague, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, given the responsibilities of the local authorities in this area.
