I propose to take Questions Nos. 487 and 488 together.

The primary purpose of vetting carried out by the Garda National Vetting Bureau is to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults.

Vetting is carried out by An Garda Síochána in accordance with the provisions of the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 - 2016. As Minister, I have no role in such matters.

The Garda authorities have advised that their target turnaround times for Garda Vetting Applications is 5-10 working days from the date of receipt at the Garda National Vetting Bureau. The Garda authorities have advised that 90% of all applications in the three years requested have been completed within the target time.

The below table, provided to me by the Garda authorities, details the number of applications received from 1 January to 30 June 2025:

YEAR QUARTER 1 QUARTER 2 QUARTER 3 QUARTER 4 TOTALS
2023 149,177 146,996 144,402 145,001 585,576
2024 160,813 149,647 147,617 156,584 614,661
2025 161,634 159,524 N/A N/A 321,158 (as of 30 June)
The below table details the number of applications processed during the same period:
YEAR QUARTER 1 QUARTER 2 QUARTER 3 QUARTER 4 TOTALS
2023 134,969 153,996 140,749 158,976 588,690
2024 142,863 163,702 137,945 169,455 613,965
2025 141,262 161,477 N/A N/A 302,739 (as of 30 June)
I am further informed by the Garda authorities that there may be variances between the total number of applications received in any given year and the total amount of applications processed in that year due to applications being on hand at the beginning/end of any year.
