My Department is currently considering a review of the Community Sanctions Bill 2014 that was carried out in accordance with the Programme for Government commitment to “work with all criminal justice agencies to build capacity to deliver restorative justice, safely and effectively”.
The review addresses certain issues with restorative justice that are also the subject matter of the Criminal Justice (Promotion of Restorative Justice) Amendment Bill. As the Private Members Bill is in line with policy on these issues, it was not opposed at second stage in the Dáil.
My officials are currently developing proposals for legislation to address these issues and to strengthen the range of restorative justice options available to the courts. I look forward to discussing this matter in the future when the proposals are ready to be put before the Houses.
