304. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality whether he has had any engagement with An Garda Síochána on the Crowe Report; the way in which the issues raised within the report are being addressed to ensure a high standard of roads policing, with the ultimate goal of reducing illegal behaviour and making roads safer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The vast majority of Gardaí are deeply committed to their mission of keeping communities safe and they carry out their duties with professionalism and care.

That said, the Crowe Report is very concerning.

The poor productivity identified on the part of some Gardaí in Roads Policing, along with weaknesses in the approach to supervision and management of these officers need to be addressed.

Arising from the Report, a number of recommendations were made to address the issues identified. It is reassuring that Garda management have accepted these recommendations and are putting implementation plans in place. It is now essential that work to implement these recommendations is prioritised.

I have discussed the Crowe Report with the Garda Commissioner and am assured that the Commissioner and his senior team are committed to this work. By initiating this Report, accepting the findings and establishing a steering group to implement its recommendations, An Garda Síochána is demonstrating that it is willing to address and remedy the issues identified.

I also understand that the Policing and Community Safety Authority and the Garda Síochána Board will be engaging with the Garda Commissioner on his response to the Crowe Report as part of their oversight and governance of An Garda Síochána.
