As Minister with responsibility for road safety, I welcome the publication of the independent Crowe review into An Garda Síochána's roads policing function. The Review highlights a number of very concerning issues around how some members of An Garda Síochána have carried out their duties.

Upon publication of this Review, I met with the Minister for Justice, Immigration and Home Affairs to discuss the findings contained in this report. Both I and Minister O'Callaghan are deeply committed to taking all necessary actions to keep our roads safe and I am informed that the Department of Justice, as the lead Government department, is continuing to engage with Garda management in relation to these matters.

In addition I recently met with the new Garda Commissioner and members of his senior leadership team to discuss key issues of importance to road safety. This included a discussion around the issues raised in the Crowe Review. It is essential that work to implement the key recommendations contained in this report is prioritised to ensure that the deficiencies identified are addressed fully. The Garda leadership team confirmed to me that it is committed to taking onboard the recommendations contained in the review.
