The ‘Future Forty: Ireland’s Demographic Outlook’ paper, published by my Department on 10 September, considers recent trends regarding migration and fertility at global, regional and national levels, and maps out the channels through which migration take place in Ireland. The report demonstrates how alternative scenarios for future net migration and fertility rates can affect projections for Ireland’s population and demographic profile.

This report is a precursor to the publication later this year of a broader publication (‘Future Forty’), which will examine how various structural drivers may affect Ireland’s economic and fiscal position over the next forty years. The work was undertaken on foot of recommendations from the Commission on Welfare and Taxation and focuses on key policy areas, including Climate Change and the Green Transition, Deglobalisation, Demographics, Digitalisation, EU Enlargement, Health, and Housing.

The Demographic Outlook report seeks to add to the existing evidence base and research undertaken by the likes of the CSO and ESRI by providing an alternative approach to estimating future net migration flows.

As to the next steps, my Department will liaise with other relevant Departments and agencies in order to support them in understanding and potentially utilising the Future Forty Demographic projections as part of their long-term planning and strategic policy-making processes.
