In addition to the universal Child Benefit payment, families on low incomes may be able to avail of one or more of the following social welfare payments:

  • the Child Support Payment with primary social welfare payments, €62 per week for those aged 12 and over, and €50 per week for under 12s.;
  • the Working Family Payment for low-paid employees with children; and
  • the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.
These schemes provide targeted assistance that is directly linked to household income and thereby support low-income families with children.

Addressing child poverty is a key priority for the Government. Any additional measures will be considered in the context of the forthcoming Budget.

Matters in relation to housing and childcare are under the responsibility of the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality.
