The Fuel Quality Directive (Directive 98/70/EC as amended), or FQD, sets the technical specifications on health and environmental grounds for fuels to be used with positive ignition and compression-ignition engines. As Minister for Climate, Energy, and the Environment, my Department is responsible for overseeing the testing and sampling of fuels as required by that Directive. Under national legislation, a person cannot market these fuels in the State unless they comply with the environmental specifications set out in the Annexes to the FQD, as amended. I am satisfied that sufficient measures are in place in line with the FQD to reduce the impact of pollutants produced by these fuels on the environment and people’s health.
