738. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if teachers who take a career break to work abroad, and whose contracts will not resume until September, are entitled to avail of jobseekers supports on their return to Ireland while looking for a job prior to the reopening of schools in September; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A person who takes a career break is not regarded as being unemployed during the agreed period of the career break and as such does not satisfy the conditions for receipt of a jobseeker's payment.

Where the agreed period of the career break has ended, and the person has sought to return to work but cannot due to a lack of a vacancy, they may apply for Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance. In such cases, the individual circumstances of the case will be taken into consideration before a decision is made. The person must also satisfy the other qualifying conditions for the scheme.

If the Deputy is aware of a specific case, she should advise the person to contact their local Intreo Centre who will advise them further.
