641. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government his reasoning for scheduling the Presidential election on Friday on 24 October; if he will consider scheduling all future elections on a weekend to avoid school closures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [47844/25]

Arrangements for the holding of elections and referendums, including the setting of the polling day, are set out in legislation. Electoral law allows for the taking of the poll at elections and referendums on any day of the week and this flexibility allows all relevant factors to be taken into account at any given time in setting the polling day. Electoral law and policy is kept under ongoing review by my Department but it is not possible to anticipate the range of factors that may impact on the selection of a particular polling day in the future, so that flexibility remains necessary.
