Access between the islands and the mainland is the most fundamental requirement for those living on our offshore islands and is a lifeline for island communities. Access impacts on every aspect of island life, including health and welfare services, education, employment, social and family life, and business.
The Government recognises that affordable, frequent and safe transport services and a developed infrastructure are important prerequisites for maintaining island communities.
Physical connectivity to the mainland depends on the availability of safe harbours both on the islands and on the mainland. Notable improvements have been made over the years through State investment in major pier construction projects, and these will continue over the life of this Government.
The Deputy may be aware that together with my colleague, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers, I recently announced a record investment of €35.75 million for the Inis Oírr pier development project. I believe it is significant that this was the first project to be announced under the revised National Development Plan, as it demonstrates the Government's commitment to investing in our island communities.
With regard to the pier at Roonagh, which serves Clare Island and Inishturk, my Department has previously provided funding to Mayo County Council to prepare an Islands Connectivity Report, which has identified development at Roonagh pier as a priority.
In this regard, Mayo County Council has conducted a tender process to procure engineering consultancy services to prepare a Preliminary Business Case, incorporating a Strategic Assessment, for Marine Infrastructure Improvement Options at Roonagh Pier, Co. Mayo. Mayo County Council has submitted an application to my Department for funding and approval to award a contract following this tender process. My officials are working closely with colleagues in Mayo County Council in this regard.
I have recently met with community representatives on both Clare Island and Inishturk and I am very well aware of the need to progress this development. I am determined that this project progresses without undue delay.
