In 2023, the Government approved funding of up to 85% (£38.25m) for the construction cost of a new Teaching Building on the Derry campus through an allocation of up to €44.5m from the Shared Island Fund. Ulster University (UU) has committed to funding the 15% balance (£12.75m) as well as any cost overruns. UU estimates a 48 to 60-month construction period.
Following extensive pre-planning engagement with Derry-Strabane District Council, a full planning application was submitted in June 2025. Subject to approval, UU hope to have the facility ready for students in the 2028/ 29 academic year.
Officials in my Department will continue to work closely UU senior management as this project progresses.
