The immunisation programme in Ireland is based on the advice of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC). The committee's recommendations are based on the prevalence of the relevant disease in Ireland and international best practice in relation to immunisation.
A well-functioning society requires a certain level of public health. One way to achieve this broad goal of safe-guarding the health of the population is through immunisation programmes which confer benefit to both individuals and the general public by way of herd immunity. In Ireland, immunisation is optional and is offered free of charge to eligible at-risk groups as part of the National Immunisation Programme.
