2428. To ask the Minister for Health if she will request the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh to provide details of the background to the decision taken by the hospital in 2009 to operate on a person (details supplied) If the appliance or metalwork used in the operation was the appropriate one and if it was quality approved, certified and licensed; if the consultant had written or verbal approval from senior professionals in that department; if the hospital will also explain the rationale behind the decision to shorten the good leg by shaving the bone in that leg; if this case will be included with others in any review or investigation into this type of procedure undertaken by this hospital; the reason it was advised by WUH that this patient be confined to a wheelchair prior to the various operations when some years later a consultant at WUH described that advice as being incorrect and absolutely unnecessary; if the appropriate follow up was undertaken by both hospitals; if the email issued to the patients mother, dated 22/08/2025 will be withdrawn given the current controversy’s; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
