The National Psychiatric Inpatient Reporting System (NPIRS) database, which is managed by the Health Research Board (HRB), collects data from all approved centres under the Mental Health Act 2001.

The publication of Activities of Irish Psychiatric Units and Hospitals 2024 (which can be found at www.hrb.ie/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AIPUH_Activities_2024_annual_report.pdf), gives data in respect of admission and diagnosis, including Mental Health Intellectual Disability (MHID). However, the report does not include information in relation to diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The HRB’s latest report states that there were 34 admissions in 2024 with MHID, of which 26 were voluntary admissions and 8 were involuntary admissions.

As the information requested by the Deputy is not routinely collected, I have referred this question to the HSE, who may be able to provide further information to the Deputy.
