Under the 2025 Programme for Government there is a commitment to ‘Explore ways to ban commercial sunbed use’. Minister of State, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, has established a cross departmental Working Group which has been tasked with assessing the feasibility and implications of a ban, evaluating public health, economic and regulatory considerations in order to provide evidence-based recommendations to the Minister of State.
As you are aware a Public Consultation has been launched to inform this public health policy initiative. This consultation aims to gather public and industry views on the health risks associated with sunbed use and the implications of a ban.
The Minister of State will be informed by the Public Consultation report and the Working Group Report.
It is premature at this stage in the policy development process for a decision to be made regarding the publishing of legislation to prohibit commercial sunbed use.
