I can advise the Deputy that the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 (as amended) allows for the revocation of a certificate of naturalisation under only the most serious of circumstances, as set out in section 19 of the Act, for example, when it has been obtained by fraud or when the individual poses a serious risk or threat to the State.

The loss of citizenship has serious consequences and each case is considered very carefully.

This part of the Act does not apply to citizenship by birth or descent, which cannot be revoked.
