The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of Garda business, including the allocation of the Garda fleet throughout the State, under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024. As Minister, I have no role in these independent functions.

An Garda Síochána publishes information on the Garda fleet. This can be found at the following link: www.garda.ie/en/about-us/our-departments/finance-services/finance-fleet-management.html.

The table below has been provided to me by the Garda Authorities and outlines the number of Roads Policing marked cars allocated to and removed from the Garda fleet in 2024 and in 2025 as on 31 August.

- Allocated Removed
2024 20 18
2025 0 8
Furthermore I am advised that Fleet Management have purchased an additional 10 marked Roads Policing Cars, all of which will be allocated before the end of the year.

The purchase and allocation of vehicles by An Garda Síochána is made on the basis of identified operational demands, the availability of resources and is reviewed on a continual basis.

The Government is committed to ensuring that An Garda Síochána has the resources it needs to fight crime and a strengthened, well-resourced Garda organisation is central to this policy. I was pleased to secure unprecedented funding of over €2.48 billion for this year, a 27% increase since 2020 which is supporting the continued recruitment of Garda members and staff.

The following table, provided by An Garda Síochána, outlines the number of Gardaí who have resigned in each of the last five years and to date in 2025 who were under 25; aged 25 to 29; aged 30 to 34; aged 35 to 39; aged 40 to 49 and aged over 50. The age categories requested have been adjusted to avoid duplication of numbers in the various age brackets.

Ages <25 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-49 50+ Grand Total
2025 7 15 24 18 16 2 82

1597. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of Gardaí who resigned within five years of joining An Garda Síochána in each of the past 10 years and to date in 2025; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45644/25]

I am advised that a total of 398 Gardaí resigned from An Garda Síochána within five years of joining in the past ten years, as of 31 July 2025. There were none recorded in 2015.

The breakdown for 2016 to 2025 is as follows:

2016 12
2017 8
2018 25
2019 36
2020 40
2021 59
2022 56
2023 66
2024 65
2025 (as of 31 July) 31
Grand Total 398
The number of Gardaí who opt to resign is still low by any objective standard, with the resignation rate currently between 1% and 2%. According to An Garda Síochána, its level of resignations is far below those experienced by UK police services, which is approximately 10%, and is far below those experienced by the private sector which is between 10% and 20%. In addition, police services in the US, New Zealand, and Canada have all reported an increase in resignations in excess of the Garda resignation rate in the last few years.

There is still a strong interest in a career in An Garda Síochána. The latest Garda recruitment campaign in February attracted 6,784 applicants and I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that there is a second competition opening in September.

However, it is not a career that suits everyone and it is increasingly the case, especially in Ireland's very strong economy, that people may wish to change career. It is also the case that some Gardaí rejoin again after leaving the organisation.

The overall Garda workforce, which includes Gardaí, Garda Staff and Reserves is higher than ever at 18,000.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the following table outlines the number of Gardaí who have resigned and retired in each of the past 5 years. Figures include Voluntary, Compulsory, Cost Neutral Early Retirements, Resignations, Resignations not suitable for appointment and Resignation in lieu of dismissal.

Year Number
2020 316
2021 386
2022 446
2023 486
2024 379
2025* 201
*Figures as of 30 July 2025

In the interest of transparency, An Garda Síochána publish information in relation to probationer Gardai which is publicly available and can be found at the following link. I can advise the Deputy that the figures up to and including July have been published on the website.

www.garda.ie/en/about-us/our-departments/human-resources-and-people-development/garda-hr-directorate/garda-strength-breakdown-2025/.

The Deputy should select the link for July 2025, and then the choose the sheet titled 'Allocation of Probationer Gardaí by Division and Station 2015 to 31st July'. Published information is supplied by An Garda Síochána.

It should also be noted that in August 2025 a further 154 Garda attested from the Garda Training College in Templemore.

1599. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of Gardaí who had previously resigned and rejoined the Gardaí in each of the last 10 years and to date in 2025; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45646/25]

The Garda authorities have provided the information in the table below on the number of Gardaí who have rejoined the organisation in each of the last 10 years and to date in 2025:

Year Number of Rejoiners
2015 1
2016 2
2017 0
2018 1
2019 0
2020 0
2021 1
2022 2
2023 1
2024 6
2025 to date 5
The benefits of former members re-joining the organisation are that they already understand the culture, systems, and expectations within An Garda Síochána. The re-joiner process has been streamlined following the recent focus on retention. An Garda Síochána believe that a smooth re-joining process makes the organisation more attractive to former members considering a return.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible by law for the management and administration of all Garda business, including HR matters.

I understand that the Deputy has asked for the percentage of garda trainees in the past five years who were from disadvantaged, very disadvantaged or extremely disadvantaged backgrounds as measured by the Pobal deprivation index.

I am advised by An Garda Síochána that they do not hold records of this nature. Therefore, it is not possible to provide the information requested.
