Combatting all forms of domestic, sexual and gender-based remains a priority for this Government, for my Department and for the Garda Commissioner.

The nationwide roll out of Divisional Protective Service Units (DPSUs) - which ensures that when vulnerable victims of crimes such as domestic abuse and sexual violence present to Gardaí, they are met with a consistently high standard of specialist, sensitive, professional and expert assistance - was an action under both the 'Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland' and ‘Supporting a Victim's Journey’.

There is now a DPSU in every Garda division across the country.

I'm informed by the Commissioner that to ensure the continued level of delivery of policing services within Garda Divisions, local and Senior Garda Management are consulted during the allocation of personnel and are responsible for the specific deployment/assignment of duties being undertaken at Divisional level.

The situation remains closely monitored by the Garda Senior Leadership Team, in line with the Operating Model of policing at Divisional level to ensure optimum use of all Garda Resources in providing the best possible Garda service to the community.

The included table outlines the number of Gardaí, by rank attached to Mayo, Roscommon and Longford divisional protective services bureau on the 31st July 2025.

Rank Number
Inspector 1
Sergeant 3
Garda 15
Total 19

In the interest of transparency, information in relation to the allocation of Gardaí by Division, Station and rank, including for County Louth, is publicly available and can be found at the following link: www.garda.ie/garda/en/about-us/our-departments/human-resources-and-people-development/garda-hr-directorate/garda-strength-breakdown-2025/garda-strength-breakdown-2025.html.

The Deputy should select the Garda Workforce figures for July and access the file titled “Garda Members by Division District Station 2009 to 31 July 2025” for a breakdown of total Gardaí numbers by Garda station going back to 2009.

Published information is supplied by An Garda Síochána, is based upon operational data and may be subject to change.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the distribution and stationing of Garda personnel throughout the State under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024. As Minister, I have no role in these independent functions.

The Deputy should select July 2025 (the latest date for when figures are available) and then select the report titled ‘Community Garda by Division 2009 to 31st of July 2025’

The Programme for Government commits to examining a range of further measures to grow Garda numbers, including funding the recruitment of 5,000 members over the next five years, supporting and expanding the Garda Training College in Templemore, and widening the talent pool applying to join An Garda Síochána.

The Group’s work is nearing completion and I look forward to the submission of the final report to me in the very near future.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1565 and 1614 together.

The Garda College in Templemore is the national training centre for all of An Garda Síochána. The facility is used for the delivery of both the training of new entrants to the organisation and the delivery of regular and specialist training to all serving Gardaí, including the Garda Reserve and Garda Staff.

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that phase I of the Foundation Training Programme is divided into three distinct stages, with Garda trainees residing within the Garda College for stages 1 and 3. The planning cycle of the admission of new Garda trainees to the Garda College allows for the commencement of a new intake of between 200 to 225 trainees every 12 weeks allowing for four new intakes per year. However, in a 3 year cycle it is possible to schedule a 5th intake of trainees to commence training in the 3rd year.

An Garda Síochána is currently considering, with the OPW, options to increase capacity in the Garda College from 2026.
