The vast majority of members of An Garda Síochána serve the organisation and the State with integrity each and every day of their careers. We are rightly proud of the job they do often under difficult circumstances.

Of course for the public to have absolute confidence in a police service, they must have faith that when the law is broken by those who are responsible for upholding it, the same treatment will apply to those who wear the uniform as those who don’t.

Disciplinary matters within An Garda Síochána are of course a matter for the Garda Commissioner. Further, the conduct of court proceedings is a matter for the courts.

To be of assistance I have sought an update and I am advised by the Garda authorities that court outcomes are not maintained in relation to Gardaí who retire or resign prior to a court conviction.

Since April 2024 figures in relation to court convictions of serving Gardaí who are subject to suspension from duty at the time of the conviction are recorded.

Table 1 below outlines the reasons for the conclusion of a member’s suspension following a court conviction since April 2024.

Table 2 below breaks this data down further into the rank of the members concerned since April 2024.

Table 1 – Reason the suspension of a Garda ended following a court Conviction.

Reason suspension ended / lifted 2024 2025 Totals
Dismissal 1 1 2
Resignation 8 3 11
Retirement 2 0 2
Total 11 4 15

An Garda Síochána has a proud tradition in serving communities and protecting the State with over 18,000 Garda members, civilians and reserve.

An Garda Síochána are guided by three simple Policing Principles which state that policing services must be provided:

  • Independent and impartially
  • In a manner that respects human rights
  • In a manner that supports the proper and effective administration of justice.
We are fortunate in this country that every community wants to see more Gardaí visible in their area. The Gardaí provide an invaluable service and as an organisation are committed to the highest professional standards.

The Garda Commissioner is by law responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána, including all HR and performance and discipline related matters.

Fiosrú is the independent body responsible for receiving complaints from the public concerning members of An Garda Síochána. I am advised by Fiosrú that the tables below set out the number of complaints against Gardaí by division over the last five years.

The below table, provided to me by the Garda authorities, details the number of Gardaí suspended in tabular form, per Garda Region and National Units between 2020 and 2024 and as of 7 August 2025. I am advised that as suspension data is subject to ongoing change and regularly fluctuates, the statistics below relate to the number of individuals newly suspended within the given year. The data is presented per Garda Region and National Units so that individual members concerned are not identifiable due to the low number of suspensions within any relevant Division / Section.

- 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 Total
Dublin Metropolitan Region 4 17 13 13 8 8 63
Eastern Region 11 7 10 6 2 10 46
North Western Region 12 7 10 2 6 2 39
Southern Region 10 10 8 4 1 4 37
National Units 4 3 3 2 1 0 13
Total number of new suspensions 41 44 44 27 18 24 198
