The objective of the School Meals Programme is to provide regular, nutritious food to children to support them in taking full advantage of the education provided to them.  The programme is an important component of policies to encourage school attendance and extra educational achievement.

The table below contains details of the number of schools in receipt of Hot School Meals by county for the 2024/25 academic year.  The 2025/26 academic year has just commenced and my department are currently receiving applications.

The objective of the School Meals Programme is to provide regular, nutritious food to children to support them in taking full advantage of the education provided to them.  The programme is an important component of policies to encourage school attendance and extra educational achievement.

In Budget 2025, it was announced that the Hot School Meals Scheme would be extended to all remaining primary schools in 2025 meaning that approximately 3,200 schools and 550,000 children are eligible for hot school meals in 2025/2026 academic school year.

The table below contains details of schools in receipt of the Hot School Meals for the 2024/2025 academic year, broken down by class size of students in each school as requested.

Student Numbers <=20 <=40 <=60 <=80 <=100 <=150 <=200 <=300 <=400 <=500 >500 total
No of Schools  90 231 184 197 191 315 234 310 172 78 54 2056
All primary schools are now eligible for the Hot School Meals and details of school name and county location are available on gov.ie.
