To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the percentage of applications for fuel allowance from persons over 70 years of age that were refused the fuel allowance in 2024 and to-date in 2025, in tabular form; the top three reasons for refusal; and the grade of staff member within his Department that decides to approve or refuse fuel allowance for persons over 70 years of age. Statistics on claim processing are collated at scheme level, and it is not possible to provide breakdowns by individual claim characteristics such as reasons for refusal or age of the claimant. In 2024 a total of 11,070 applications for Fuel Allowance were rejected.
Applications for Fuel Allowance are decided by staff at Clerical Officer and Executive Officer grades, which includes applications from persons over 70 years of age.
